We are into our 3rd week of 5 classes and all of the students are creating some remarkable portraits!

February 2016 Workshop

February 13th at the Sandy Senior Center on 9310 1300 E, we will be holding our first Saturday workshop for the New Year.  "A Loose Style of Painting with Watercolor" with Bonita "Bonnie" Tollefson.  (9-4pm-Bring a Lunch & Snack to Share).  $45.00 for Members and $65.00 for Non-Members due before Feb. 1st!  Drop off a check to Karla or Cindy on Monday afternoon, or at the front desk, in an envelope addressed to Karla.

Come and enjoy a fun day throwing some paint around with fellow artists.  Relax and learn how easy, loose painting can be.  Practice along as Bonnie demonstrates her methods with us.  Play with clear wrap for beautiful effects.







Supplies Needed: Your usual watercolor painting setup, pigments, brushes, paper towels, etc. plus the following:
*1 sheet of 260 rough or 300 lb. quality watercolor paper such as: Arches, Fabriano.
*Some scraps of paper to practice blending wet into wet pigment.
*Clear Wrap
*Table Easel is optional but recommended

Watercolor Mosaic Workshop by Mary Pusey-Updated 8-19

Mark your calendars for September 19th and sign up for Mary Pusey's awesome new workshop, "Watercolor Mosaics".

This workshop will be held at the Sandy Senior Center, 9:30-4:00 and the cost is only $35 for members and $50 for non-members.  Payments can be made via check, made out to SSC (Sandy Senior Center-9310 S. 1300 E.) and dropped off. Mary was born in Murray, Utah, but grew up in Midvale.
She began painting as a teacher in-service class and what started as a way to bring art into the classroom, ended in a love for watercolor. She retired from teaching in 2013, and now paints full time.

Mary continues to learn about watercolor by attending workshops of other diverse artists and has had the opportunity to paint in both, England and Spain.  She loves painting from nature in the great outdoors.

Mary is a signature member of the Utah Watercolor Society.
She has been their Exhibition Chair for the past two years and is now the Web and Constant Contact Communications Chair. She is also a current member of Art At The Main, a co-operative gallery in the Salt Lake City Main Library.

Mary has had paintings juried into and won awards in exhibitions sponsored by Intermountain Society Artists, the Schorr Gallery, and the Utah Watercolor Society. Her paintings have also been juried into Western Federation Exhibitions and the Pioneer Memorial Theater’s Loge Gallery Exhibits at the University of Utah and into the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe 118th Juried Exhibition at the National Arts Club in New York City. She recently received an Award Of Merit from the UWS Spring Open Exhibition.

She currently lives in Holladay, Utah, with her husband.

Mary has many paintings done in this unique style, all amazingly beautiful,

(Reminds me of stained glass windows),  I've had the privilege of taking this workshop when it was offered at the Cache Valley Chapter of the UWS.  I highly recommend it.  Mary is such a wonderful teacher, explains every step, encourages you along the way, and takes the time to make sure you are enjoying her workshop.

The supplies are the normal watercolor supplies with the exception of hot press 140 lb. paper. (It's a dream to paint on, using Mary's methods).  Below is a full list of supplies.

*Your usual pallet with a variety of pigment hues.

Mary has quite a few yellows, oranges, reds, blues, and greens.

Sometimes she just puts extra colors on a plate if her pallet is 

already full. Any brand is fine. Make sure you have space to 

let colors mix on your pallet. 

*Small pointed brushes-sizes 4 and 6 work well. 

Mary uses Leow Cornell pointed round brushes, but any brand is 

fine as long as they are finely pointed.

*Pencil-Keep it soft, 2B-4B-Fine. The less pencil marks showing the better.

*Soft eraser-less chance of abrading the soft surface of hot-pressed paper.

*Your Usual Stuff-Paper towels, water jar, ruler, tissues, apron, 

sponge, tape, etc. You know what you need to paint comfortably. 

You will not need to bring any type of resist or masking. We will be painting and 

leaving the white spaces between. Do Not Use Mr. Clean sponges.

*Pictures, photos or digital images are fine.  Mary will give 

you a copy of what she will be painting. You may trace it and paint,

or draw your own image to paint. Bring photos/digital images of 

something you would like to do on your own.

*Sketch book to design your composition.

*Back board w/clip-or whatever you normally use as a support.  Mary uses an old foam core support

and clips her photo to the painting. 

*Patience!-Mosaic Painting is a thoughtful creative process. Be patient

Rob Adamson

Lester Lee's Workshop-Will be Rescheduled

Lester had a family emergency last weekend and had to cancel his on-going workshop at his studio in Clarkston, but Barbara is working on getting another fixed date for us.  I'll let you all know when that will happen.  Cindy

Lester Lee's Workshop

On Saturday, June 20th from 9:30-4, Lester Lee will be teaching us: "Practices That Make Our Paintings POP!"  He will share with us, ways to develop form and composition in our paintings as well as a whole lot more.  You don't want to miss this great opportunity to take Lester's Workshop.  It will be held at the Sandy Senior Center and doors open at 9 AM

Cost for Members is $35 and Non-Members: $50 (but you can join the Sandy Watercolor Guild for only $15 per year so why not become a member for the same price that Non-Members pay!)  LUNCH is Included!  Please bring your own breakfast and a breakfast type snack to share!

Please bring your usual watercolor supplies and some 140 lb. Arches paper.

Lester will be opening his Studio & Bunkers (Sleep Over) on July 11-12th to those of us who would like some feedback-critique on the paintings we do for this workshop plus he will be offering a follow-up workshop!  Again: the price will be $35 for Members, $50 for Non-Members.  I will be posting further information as I receive it. 

Ian Ramsay Workshop-Part 2

Here are the drawings that you will need to participate in the Thursday evening meeting.

If you prefer to draw your design, please right click the first image and "Save".  This can then be printed from your home printer as an 8.5 x 11.



If you prefer to use an enlargement (12" x 16") please "save" the other 2 images, print and tape these together to create one large image.  Use graphite to trace to your watercolor paper.

Ian Ramsay Workshop

WORKSHOP MATERIALS & INSTRUCTIONS

     Please come prepared to the workshop, with your drawing carefully laid out on a piece of watercolor paper to the size of 12”x16” or larger.  Use good quality W.C. paper (Arches or Fabriano); 140 or 300 pound, either cold press or rough.  The paper should be secured to a firm board

 with tape, staples or both.

     You will need a variety of good quality brushes, large and small, for washes and details respectively.  Also, bring along a stiff bristle oil painting ‘Fan’ brush for 

some special techniques.

     As to paints, a wide variety of colors can be used and adapted to our needs.  I will be using, specifically:  yellow ochre, hansa yellow, raw sienna, burnt sienna, burnt umber, cadmium red, quinacridone rose, deep scarlet, sap green, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue and thalo green (blue shade).  I also use other colors, but more than enough can be done with those enumerated.  In addition to these watercolors, you will need a white gouache…preferably 

permanent white.

Chinese white watercolor would also be acceptable.

     Please bring along a good natural sponge for softening and correcting mistakes.  Yes, we can fix a watercolor painting!  We all make mistakes and I will show 

you how to deal with them.

     Be prepared to relax and have fun.  This won’t be the Spanish inquisition…  Ian. 

Chinese Brushwork Workshop hosted by Virginia

If you didn't attend Virginia's recent workshop on Chinese Brushwork, you missed out on a wonderful, fun filled day.  Virginia opened her home to us and her amazing studio space was perfectly arranged to accommodate those of us who had the opportunity to join her.  She even had decorated this space for the Chinese New Year and provided a delectable luncheon that Suzan, Maggie and Karla helped to prepare.  (Thank You Ladies-it was Delicious!)
The workshop was extremely relaxed and you knew you were in a friends inviting home the whole time.  The feeling of being welcome was always present.  Virginia was a gracious host and her teaching methods for this difficult style of painting were helpful and encouraging.  There was no stress, just simple brush strokes, combined to create some amazing watercolor paintings.  These paintings were created by Karla: Thank You for Sharing them with us!
The first one is the Chrysanthemum and the one below that is the plum blossom.

Ian Ramsey's Recent Workshop

What an amazing artist Ian Ramsey is and the attendance at his most recent workshop was full of eager students learning from his remarkable teaching skills.   A relaxing environment at the Tyler Library in Midvale,  Ian provided detailed demos throughout the day.  He took the time to view each students work several times during the workshop, to critique and give constructive feedback.  This is a very gifted artist/teacher and if you get the opportunity in the future to take one of his many workshops, I would encourage you to get signed up the minute you hear about one, as his workshops sell out quickly!

Chinese New Year Workshop-Update

Virginia is hosting an all day "Celebration" of the Chinese New Year on February 13th from 10-5.  She will be teaching Chinese Brushwork!  Cost is : $35 for members $40 for Non-members and you can reserve your spot at the January Sandy Guild Meeting.   A Chinese Lunch is included! 
Virginia will be providing the address of her home at the Sandy guild Meeting in Jan.
Supplies to bring include: Paper, paints, brushes (Chinese Brushes if you have them), container for water and anything else you normally use when painting. 

Also, You can sign up on-line for Virginia's new classes via the Canyons Community Education Programs.  She will be teaching several watercolor classes for Beginners-Intermediate-Landscape & Florals.  Virginia will be teaching Tues at CTEC (825 E. 9085 S.) from 6-7:30 & 7:30-9 and on Weds. at Eastmont Middle School (10100 S. 1300 E.) from 5-7 & 7-9.  Cost is $60 per class.  Classes begin on Jan. 14th.   For more information check out the on-line website.

Ian Ramsey's SOLD OUT Workshop

If you have signed up for the "SOLD OUT" "Ian Ramsey's Workshop" on Jan. 18th and you need an 11" x 15" image for your drawing, please e-mail me at: artists4ever@gmail.com (Cindy Powell) and I will e-mail you the image on 2 sheets as an attachment, so you can print them out & tape them together.  (No need to go buy an enlargement unless you don't have a printer).  I will also be bringing a few copies of these image sheets to the Senior Center on Monday afternoon, during the painting group.  Let me know if I need to bring extras. 
Thank you Yvonne for getting your software working and sending me the information about Ian's workshop!  I will have a printed copy of the enlarged image for you on Monday.   
The supplies needed are:
1. A Jug of Water-a waste water bucket will be supplied, 2. The image provided, "lightly" sketched in pencil at a size of 11" x 15" or larger on good quality paper-please secure this to a board, 3. a variety of watercolor brushes and the following pigments: cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, sap green, thalo green, yellow ochre, permanent yellow deep, carbazole violet, quinacridone rose, cadmium red, burnt sienna, burnt umber, raw sienna and quinacridone gold.  (Or similar colors).
The library does not permit food in the room so we will be taking an hour for a "lunch break". 
*NOTE: Ian will have some of his paintings available to purchase!  So bring those checkbooks!  :-D
