General Information
There will be no meeting tonight due to our summer break, but we will be back in full swing, September 17th! There are some exciting things happening, some minor changes and some great workshops planned for 2015-2016.
One of the changes will be how we organize the Christmas Party. This year it will be held at the Sandy Senior Center and it will be a down-home, pot luck with a gift exchange. We will provide the main meat dish and Apple Cider! More about this in a future post.
Some of you know, I volunteered at the County Fair this summer and made some interesting contacts. These people are interested in providing us with a venue to demonstrate our painting talents by giving us the room to offer painting demos at the 2016 County Fair. You will also have the option of selling your work. Anyone interested in participating in these 4 days of demos, please call me (Cindy) 801 674 9503 and I will add you to the list. (Please note that we will need to break up the times over the 4 days, into 2-4 hour slots and you will be able to sign up for the hours you can be there. No one is required to be there for the full 4 days! Also, I will work on getting you parking passes for these time slots.) The County Fair is normally the 2nd week of August every year, but this has not been confirmed yet. There will be more information about this opportunity in the future.

Monday Paint Group
Our little group is expanding with more and more members coming back to join in the fun. Every Monday afternoon we meet and share ideas, paint, chat and enjoy each others company. Karla and Gwen shared their experimental painting with us. Using a watercolor ground on paper, they were painting goldfish for Sandi's Friday class.
and Bonnie shared a work in progress with me, which I just love and I hope she will finish. It reminded me of the older record album covers.
April Challenge
Last month the challenge was to make some image transfers from magazines and I'll bet you have a bunch of these now, but what will you do with them? Here's an idea: Combining Ev Hales suggestion of using splashes of color as backgrounds, you can simply adhere your tape transfer directly over the color splashes using glue that will dry clear, deco podge, or a gel medium.Here are a couple of samples that I made:
If you would like to take this process even further, coat the entire image transfer with the clear drying gel medium, glue or deco podge and let dry. This becomes a permanent acrylic surface that can be further painted on using acrylics or gouche. If you want to hide the straight edges, you also can cut the tape to remove most of the edges. For instance, I would cut out the bird and the branch it is sitting on. The background would then become the color splash. Experiment and see what you like best. As for Ev Hales book, it is one of many creative, art books that she has written about watercolor. A great addition to any library. I prefer the Kindle edition, but you can order a soft paper style book direct from Amazon, by clicking the book cover in the right sidebar.

Image Transfer-March Challenge
This is a mixed media resource that has been around for a very long time. I was making some of these image transfers last week at the Monday afternoon group and several of you said you didn't get a chance to come over and see what I was doing. It's a very simple technique that requires only a few basic supplies: a good quality magazine (needed for the high quality inks they use-National Geographic is my favorite but Smithsonian is a good resource too!), clear shipping/packing tape, a tray of water or a large bowl, (whatever you have handy), warm to hot water and scissors. Optional: something like a bone folder (shown in the photo) or plastic spatula to scrape with, however this can and does scrape off some of the inks if you rub too hard in one place. (But that just makes it more grungy looking!)There are only a few steps: 1. locate an image you want to make a transfer of, 2. lay the shipping tape over the image being careful not to get any wrinkles, 3. soak this image for up to 5 minutes then, 4. rub the paper off the back of the image with your finger or bone folder until all the white particles are removed. (repeat these steps if needed to remove all the white particles) The clear transfer is now ready to add to an art journal page, a painting or scrapbook album.
Notes: 1. for larger images, slightly over-lap the tape and add as many strips as you need to cover the image completely, 2. You can use clear glaze, clear drying glue or an acrylic gel medium to adhere your transfer onto your substrate. (paper or canvas or ?) 3. This process does not work with inkjet prints but works great with laser or toner prints. If your printer uses Durabright Inks, they are dye based and will work for this technique provided you allow them to dry completely. (allow 24 hours) 4. Any images that you use from magazines are copyrighted and credit should be given to either the magazine, the photographer or preferably both. (The image shown in the photo was deliberated blurred by immersing it under water when I took the shot. Photo is from an old National Geographic that was passed down. It was used in my experimental journal of a painted paper collage that I am still working on.)

Monday Paint Group
Our Monday get-togethers are getting popular as the weather starts to warm up. We had a full house this past Monday and everyone was having fun sharing news, painting tips and creating some mixed media tape transfers.
The Spring Show is now available for your viewing pleasure along with the ballots for voting on your favorite. I'm having a hard time deciding on just one favorite as they are all wonderful!

Spring Fever
It's been so beautiful these past few days it's hard to stay inside and paint, but we had a good turn-out at our Monday afternoon painting group. We all enjoyed the afternoon and as usual the time ticked by too quickly. Speaking of Spring Fever, is anyone interested in getting together for a picnic and paint out at Wheeler Farm? If so, let me know (Cindy) and we can get something arranged for a weekday afternoon.

Monday Paint Group
Wow-We had a great turn out yesterday! Not an empty seat in the house! Everyone was enjoying themselves by chatting with friends, watercolor painting or playing along with me (Cindy). Acrylics can be a lot of fun and we were enjoying the various processes of experimenting with some texture tools, layering colors, stamping, etc.
Reminder: next Monday is Martin Luther Kings Day, so the senior center will be closed. See you all again on Jan. 27th and those of you who played with the acrylics and want me to bind up a field journal, please bring your 6" x 4" (12 pieces) watercolor paper and your painted covers. I will bring the bind-it-all machine.

Monday Paint Group
On Monday afternoons, over at the Sandy Senior Center, watercolor artists unite to enjoy a peaceful, quiet afternoon, painting and enjoying each others company. Today we had a handful of people show up, due to the hectic holidays, but here are a few of the paintings that were created today:
This first image is a project Yvonne is working on for Sandi Olson's Friday Morning Class. It's held at the South Jordan Senior Center between 11400-10600 S. on Redwood Road, 10 to Noon the first & last Fridays of each month. Sandi also teaches Oil Painting on Tues. at the same building.
The second painting was created by Jim and it reminds me of the mountains we all see everyday to the east of us. The third image was also created by Jim and this one reminds me of the trees surrounding Lake Tahoe.
Bonnie did this adorable cats! Bonnie also teaches here locally at Indian Hills Middle School "Art for Children (Ages 6+) on Tues. 6-7 beginning Jan. 14th and she teaches Art for Tiny Tots (Ages 3-5) at the same school but from 5:00- 5:30 & 5:30 -6:00 beginning Jan. 14th. Cost is $30 for the 6+ and $20 for the other class + a $15 material fee paid directly to Bonnie at the first class. For on-line registration: Canyons Community Education or register at the Community Ed Office at: 825 E. 9085 S. Room 107 on Jan. 6th-7th & 8th from 9-4 only.
This final image is one I am working on but since I didn't have the right supplies with me, I ended up using a gold gel pen (which will be spritzed with water for the visual effect) and I will add some gesso to the dew drops later.
So if you are 60+, we would love to have you join us! Every Monday except Holidays, from 1-3 at the Senior Center located at: 9310 S. 1300 E. in Sandy.
