I read recently about something called a 'solander box' so of course I had to satisfy my curiosity. They come in standard "art sizes" such as 11x14, 14 x 18, etc. They have a lid that removes completely and a long side of the box drops down once the lid is removed. They can be very pricey for libraries and museums, but dick blick has them here:
