MARY PUSEY

THE WILD SIDE OF WATERCOLOR

Painting on Yupo and Terraskin Brand Papers

This class will experiment with alternative papers. The first class will be spent getting acquainted with the qualities of these papers. Subsequent classes will be spent painting a class painting and/or painting an image(s) brought from home.

Yupo and TerraSkin brand papers have very different qualities than watercolor papers. Care must be taken with both brands of paper to not get fingerprints on the papers. Oil will be left, and paint will not adhere. Use latex or nitrile gloves when handling, or take care to handle with fingertips on the edges. Paint will dry on top, and will stay brighter and stronger. Painting on top of previous washes will lift the paint below if care is not taken.  Each layer needs to be dried before going to the next step. The thicker the paint, the easier it is to add subsequent layers. Paintings need to be dried completely flat to retain the painted image. These papers do not need to be stretched. They retain their smooth surface as you paint. You will need to attach them to a painting board so that you can manipulate the painting for desired affects.

Yupo is a synthetic “paper” that is very slick, won’t absorb water, and can be taken back to white paper in the first washes.

TerraSkin is an organic paper made with rock dust and binders. It is similar to Yupo, but has a softer surface. Water will sit on top until dry. It can be taken back to white in the first washes.

Both papers can be purchased through Cheap Joes online. Yupo is also available at Blicks in Sugar House.

Materials List

Bring your usual paints, brushes, paper towels, and water container, etc.

You will also need a board and clips or tape to attach the paper to the board.

Hair dryer

Yupo paper (pad of 11x14 sheets, 20 sheets, is very convenient and can be shared)

I will bring TerraSkin paper with me to the class for purchase if desired.
